Hi, let me start by stating that I suck at writing, but I am decent at coding :).
You see, I had this brilliant idea. Why not code my own blog website from scratch? That way, I could have full control over everything, from the features to the design. It would be fun and challenging, right?
Wrong.
It was a disaster.
Coding my own blog website was like opening Pandora’s box. It unleashed a horde of problems and headaches that I had to deal with. Bugs, security issues, performance problems, hosting costs, updates, backups, you name it. It was a never-ending nightmare.
I spent more time coding than writing. I had to constantly work on my website, adding new features and fixing old ones. I had to keep up with the latest trends and technologies in web development.
All of this distracted me from my main goal: writing.
I realized that I was a terrible writer. I had so many things to say, but I didn’t know how to say them well. I lacked the skills and the time to write good content. I was too busy coding and maintaining my website, instead of focusing on improving my writing and reaching more readers.
I decided to quit coding my own blog website.
I realized that coding my own blog website was a bad idea. It was not helping me achieve my goal of becoming a better writer and blogger. It was actually holding me back.
I decided to switch to a different blogging platform, one that would handle all the technical stuff for me, so that I could focus on writing. There are plenty of options out there, such as WordPress, Medium, Substack, Ghost, etc. They all have their advantages and disadvantages, but they all have one thing in common: they let you write without worrying about coding. .
That’s what I needed.
And that’s what I did.
That is how I landed here, on Medium
I don’t regret coding my own blog website. It was a useful learning experience for me. But I also don’t miss it. It was not the right choice for me as a blogger.
If you are a software developer who wants to start a blog or already has one, think twice before coding your own blog website from scratch. Unless you really love it and have tons of time for it, it’s probably not worth it.
You just need to write.
